Vehicle water pumps transmit the coolant using centrifugal force and impeller blades to the vehicle’s engine. To be precise, the cooled water moves to the water jacket which is located at the engine cylinder where actual engine combustion processes happen. The pump uses centrifugal force to pump water to the outside as it runs and to flow to the center continuously. The inlet pump is found at the center. The fluid hit the vanes of the pump which flings the fluid outside the pump from where it enters the engine.
The fluid flows from the pump to the engine block, to the cylinder and then to the radiator before finally coming back to the pump. The radiator then takes the water and cools it by blowing air over radiator fins. The water is then transmitted to the water pump and the whole process start all over again.
The pump circulates the water every time the engine is in operation. Sometimes the water pump can get damaged. If you hear grinding sound then it is an indication that the bearings are worn out. While the bearings can be replaced, purchasing a new pump is always the best option.
Similarly, gaskets or shaft seals also fail. If they do, you will notice water leakage from the pump. A gasket can be replaced. If the shaft seal breaks down, you will need to replace the entire pump. Pump maintenance is a rather easy task. You just need to ensure that the coolant is working properly and has a suitable amount of antifreeze. It is imperative that you check all hoses are not leaking.

- Coolant leak
A water pump has several seals and gaskets that contains coolant and promotes its flow from the radiator to the engine. This gaskets and seals wear out eventually. When this happens, you will notice coolant leakage.

Leakage can cause coolant contamination which in turn could lead to rust. Deposit build-up could also reduce the performance of your engine.
